FOREWORD
The academic year 2004/2005 at the Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) will be a
jubilee of an extraordinary significance. Two basic dates, namely the 6th of October 1904 and the 24th
of May 1945 are vital in the history of our Alma Mater. The former is related to setting up the
Königliche Technische Hochschule zu Danzig, and the latter is the date of transforming it into
the Polish academic state university – Politechnika Gdanska. Consequently, in 2004 our university
is going to celebrate the centenary of the first academic year in Gdansk, and in 2005 - the 60th
anniversary of the existence of the Gdansk University of Technology, presently the largest technical
university in northern Poland.
STATEMENT
The group of the technical heritage enthusiasts and researchers regarding the:
as well as, respecting the tradition of international meetings devoted to the heritage of technology which have been organized in Gdansk in 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999; Pan-European research on cultural heritage in the field of technology and the activities of the Forum UNESCO - University and Heritage; centenary of the technical university education in Gdansk (October 6, 1904) and the 60th Anniversary of establishing the Politechnika Gdanska - Gdansk University of Technology (May 24, 1945); BACKGROUND
Poland's first International Seminar "Preservation of the Industrial Heritage - Gdansk Outlook"
(PIH-GO) was organised in Gdansk in 1993, and its second edition -
in 1995 (PIH-GO II). The aesthetic interpretation of industrial
monuments was enhanced by means of the guest exhibition "Bridge, Mill and Factory.
Technological – Cultural Monuments in Baden-Württemberg", kindly delivered by the
Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit in Mannheim, Germany. In further co-operation with
that institution the next special project "Technology and Heritage" was executed as a contribution to
the Millennium of the City of Gdansk celebrated in 1997. Three guest exhibitions were brought to
Gdansk: "Old Enamel Advertising Panels", "Historical Ships from the Neckar and Rhine Rivers",
and "The Bionics". Those activities have broaden the interest of the scientific circles of technology
involved in that topic - being spread to specialist from shipbuilding, water transportation, mechanical
engineering, and marketing. The break of the Millennia at the Gdansk University of Technology was
illuminated by means of the International Conference "Preservation of the Engineering Heritage -
Gdansk Outlook 2000" (PEH-GO 2000). During that event the guest
exhibition "Opus Caementitium" about ancient Roman cement and concrete was presented thanks to the
Südwest Zement in Leonberg and Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit in Mannheim, Germany.
At that time also the exhibition "Historic Bridges in Tczew", prepared by the Universität Kaiserslautern,
Germany, with the cooperation of the Politechnika Gdanska, was shown. The proceedings of the
seminars in 1993 and 1995 were published both in Polish and English in order to promote abroad
the technical heritage of Poland and to familiarise Polish audiences with the current research and
practice of the technical heritage preservation in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain,
Italy, Russia, Sweden, and the USA. The Conference PEH-GO 2000 offered
presentations in English from many additional countries - like Australia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary,
Japan, Canada and Turkey. Papers, reports and special issues about all those activities were
published altogether in twelve volumes. Apart from that research, the significant follow-ups
appeared "in hard reality". In 1997 the authorities of the city of Gdansk started a long-term
project of revitalisation of an area adjacent to the old
fortifications and the moats on
the south-east outskirts of the city. The historic district embodies engineering heritage, which
includes the splendid Stone Sluice from the 17th century. Its state of oblivion and negligence was
brought to the attention during the first PIH-GO seminar. The next
example is the monumental bridge over the Vistula river in Tczew, with three iron lattice truss
spans of 130 m long each, opened in 1857. The bridge had been closed to traffic and pedestrians in
1998 due to its poor technical condition. The Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Gdansk UT in
co-operation with the Fachgebiet Massivbau und Baukonstruktionen of the Universität Kaiserslautern,
Germany, had undertaken the assessment and promotion of the cultural values of that bridge. The
results were of a sincere support to the efforts undertaken by the local authorities focused on
gathering the financial resources necessary for its maintenance and revitalisation.
Reopening of the historical road bridge and bringing it to
public use was accomplished in October 2001, roughly 150
years after the beginning of its construction. The exhibition of 50 panels of the "Historical
Bridges over the Vistula River in Tczew" - the gift from the Kaiserslautern University -
is now on display at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Gdansk UT, and its twin-version
travels among the German universities and institutions of interest. That exhibition was on display
during the First International Congress on Construction History in Madrid, January 2003.
On May 14, 2004, the ASCE Board of Direction approved the Wisla Bridge of
Tczew as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
Another
practical achievement is the standard course on
"Cultural Aspects of Construction", which
was included in the teaching programme of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, in 1998. That approach
refers to the humanistic enrichment of engineering education and observes the present tendencies
towards the education of a new type of professional - the well-rounded engineer. Such an individual
should be able to meet challenges of modern civic society in conditions of globalisation and the
assault of information technology, where the virtual presence of pop culture competes with real
values of the cultural heritage resources.CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
The 21st century requires a rethinking of human needs and values. They are not only tangible but also intangible and the immaterial comfort of the peoples' well being becomes more and more essential. The desire to conserve the cultural identity and to preserve cultural landscapes competes with the classical tendency of progress. In our days it should be understood as an approach within a framework of sustainable development in a global dimension. Today, interest in the achievements of past generations - those in engineering representing certain material echo of their intellectual potential in particular - appears to be one of the most proper prerequisites in forming those landscapes. The landscape embraces resources of industrial, technical and engineering heritage. The preservation of those cultural resources needs appropriate methodology, professional appraisal and social approval. Always at the cross-roads there are politicians watching, pointing priorities and directing sources. Accordingly, the main objective of the International Conference HOT-GO 4 is to gather the experts involved - in order to provide a suitable forum for an interdisciplinary overview of the actual research performed and the practical experiences made - for a corresponding interpretation. The meeting should enhance the development of a co-operative network between professionals, owners, municipalities, museums, cultural associations and institutions in relation to the heritage of technology. The following problems are proposed for discussion in eight sections:
Accordingly, by analysing the proposed topics, a corresponding synthesis can be achieved - useful for the formation of the modern engineer. It is believed that he or she will be empowered to bear responsibility for reliable management and sustainable use of cultural heritage resources without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. PARTICIPANTS
The Conference is primarily offered to those who explore the history of technology, who act in favour of the preservation, protection and conservation-restoration of the industrial, technical and engineering heritage - in general, and are engaged in bringing the humanistic tune into the education of engineers - in particular.LANGUAGE
All activities of the Conference will be conducted in English only. Simultaneous translation shall not be performed.CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
Presentations will be scheduled into sections, and each of them should lead to certain conclusions carried out and expressed by a moderator. Organisers do not favour simultaneous workshops, however such a possibility can be taken into account. It is the tradition of the heritage conferences in Gdansk to offer a unique opportunity of technical visits and adjoined special events. Thus, the participants will find in the Final Programme the proposals to visit the most outstanding landmarks and sites during the field sessions, and scheduled excursions. A Pre-Conference Tour is planned to the sites labelled as "no access" army zones housing the remnants of secret plants of WW II. A 2-days Post-Conference Tour is planned to: Tczew - iron lattice truss bridge over the Vistula river, 1857; Malbork - World Heritage Site of the Teutonic Knights' Capital Castle; Kwidzyn - rare crafts school of wicker weaving; Gniew - Hoffman's kiln in operation; Ciechocinek - saline wooden graduation walls, 1832, and the salt-works, 1884; Torun - World Heritage Site of the Medieval Old and New Town, Open Air Museum with a wooden wind mill in operation.CONFERENCE FINAL PROGRAMME - EXECUTED
